SEELS HOME & NEWS

Welcome to SEELS' Home on the Web!

Special Education Elementary Longitudinal Study (SEELS) is a study of school-age students funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) in the U.S. Department of Education and is part of the national assessment of the 1997 Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA 97). From Year 2000 to 2006, SEELS is documenting the school experiences of a national sample of students as they move from elementary to middle school and from middle to high school. One important feature of SEELS is that it does not look at students' educational, social, vocational, and personal development at a single point in time. Rather, it is designed to assess change in these areas over time.

The Third and Final Wave of Data Collection is Starting Up!

Beginning in early 2004 the third and through the summer of this year the third and final data collection period for SEELS will be fielded. As in Wave 1 and Wave 2 SEELS will be collecting data through school staff, direct assessments, and parent interviews to provide information about the experience of students with disabilities. We would like to thank parents, teachers, and students in advance for all their help, support, and participation in this important study.

SEELS Data Tables Are Available!

Like all the studies associated with OSEP's national assessment of IDEA, SEELS is intended to be a national resource for teachers, parents, advocates, policymakers, and researchers. To support this range of audiences, SEELS Wave 1, and, now hot off the press, Wave 2 data is available here. The data includes parent interviews, direct assessments, school background, teacher surveys and school program surveys. SEELS data covers a wide range of topics, including student and household characteristics, students' functional skills, parental involvement/expectations, school experiences, academic achievement, classroom instruction, social skills, self concept, assessment, accommodations and much more. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Wave 1 Reports Available Now!

The SEELS reports from Wave 1 that are available now are on student and household characteristics, functional skills, disability profiles, nonschool hours, and classroom experiences. An overview report of Wave 1 as well as an outcomes report will be available soon. Additionally, there will be an ongoing stream of reports for the duration of the project. The SEELS newsletters and documents related to the study findings can be found at the following link: Info & Reports.
